Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information is collected when you visit CheapTents.com ("CheapTents," "we," "us," or "our"), how it is used and shared, and the rights and choices you have. It applies to visitors worldwide, including the United States (all states), the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, Canada, and elsewhere.
1. Who we are
CheapTents.com is an independent, reader-supported website that reviews and recommends budget camping tents. For the limited personal information described here, we act as the "data controller" (GDPR) / "business" (US state laws). You can reach us any time at hello@cheaptents.com.
2. Information we collect
CheapTents.com is a static informational website. We do not operate user accounts, logins, shopping carts, newsletters, or contact forms, and we never ask you to provide personal information to read our content. The information involved is limited to the following.
a. Information collected automatically. Like virtually every website, some data is collected automatically when you visit:
- Technical & log data (via our host and CDN, Cloudflare): your IP address, browser and device type, operating system, referring page, the pages you view, and the date and time of your visit. Cloudflare uses this to deliver the site, defend it against bots and attacks, and produce aggregate traffic statistics.
- Analytics data (via Google Analytics 4): pages viewed, time on page, approximate geographic location (typically country/region, derived from IP — Google does not log or store your full IP address in GA4), device category, language, and how you arrived (e.g., from a search engine or a link). We review this only in aggregate to understand which content is useful.
- Affiliate-link interactions (via Google Analytics events): when you click an outbound link to Amazon, we record that a click occurred, the destination link and product identifier (ASIN), and which page it was clicked from. This tells us which recommendations readers find helpful. It is not linked to your identity.
b. Information you give us voluntarily. If you email us at hello@cheaptents.com, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to write — used solely to reply to you.
We do not knowingly collect government IDs, financial account numbers, precise geolocation, biometric data, health data, racial/ethnic/religious information, or other "sensitive" categories of personal information. Any payment for a product happens entirely on Amazon — never on our site.
3. Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. CheapTents.com uses a small number:
- Analytics cookies (Google Analytics, e.g.
_ga,_ga_*): distinguish unique visitors and remember session activity so traffic counts are accurate. They do not identify you by name. - Security & performance (Cloudflare): Cloudflare may set a cookie to identify trusted traffic and protect the site from abuse. These are necessary for the site to operate securely.
- Amazon affiliate cookies: when you click an affiliate link, Amazon (not us) sets cookies on its own domain to attribute any resulting purchase to us. These are governed by Amazon's own privacy notice.
We do not use advertising, retargeting, or cross-site tracking cookies, and we do not run third-party ad networks.
Your cookie choices. You can:
- Block or delete cookies in your browser settings (most browsers let you do this per-site).
- Install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on to stop GA on every site.
- Use a browser or extension that sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal — we treat GPC as a valid opt-out of analytics and any "sale"/"sharing" where applicable.
If you are in the EEA, the UK, or another region that requires consent before non-essential cookies are set, see Section 9.
4. How we use information
- To operate, secure, and maintain the website (Cloudflare).
- To understand which articles and recommendations are useful and to improve our content (Google Analytics).
- To measure, in aggregate, which affiliate links readers use.
- To respond to emails you send us.
- To comply with legal obligations and protect against fraud, abuse, and security threats.
We do not use this information to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you, and we do not profile you for advertising.
5. Legal bases for processing (EEA / UK visitors)
If you are in the EEA or UK, we rely on the following legal bases under the GDPR and UK GDPR:
- Consent — for analytics cookies and similar non-essential technologies, requested before they are set (Section 9). You may withdraw consent at any time, with no effect on the lawfulness of prior processing.
- Legitimate interests — for the security, integrity, and basic delivery of the website (e.g., Cloudflare protecting the site), balanced against your rights and freedoms.
- Legal obligation — where we must retain or disclose information to comply with applicable law.
6. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising. We do not trade, rent, or exchange it for money or other valuable consideration. The only parties that process data in connection with your visit are our service providers, each acting under their own privacy terms:
- Cloudflare, Inc. — hosting, content delivery, security, and aggregate analytics. Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
- Google LLC (Google Analytics 4 and Google Fonts) — website analytics and font delivery. Loading our fonts causes your browser to contact Google's servers, which may receive your IP address. Google Privacy Policy.
- Amazon.com, Inc. (Amazon Associates Program) — affiliate-link attribution after you click through to Amazon. Amazon Privacy Notice.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users or the public.
7. Affiliate links
CheapTents.com participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. Our "Check Price on Amazon" buttons and product links are affiliate links that contain our Associates tracking tag. When you click one and make a purchase, Amazon attributes the sale to us and pays a commission — at no extra cost to you. See our Affiliate Disclaimer for full details. Once you click through, you are on Amazon's platform and subject to Amazon's privacy notice, not ours.
8. International data transfers
We operate from the United States, and our service providers (Cloudflare, Google, Amazon) process data in the United States and other countries. If you visit from the EEA, UK, Canada, or elsewhere, your information will be transferred to and processed in the U.S. Where required, these providers rely on safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. By using the site, you understand your information may be processed in the United States and other jurisdictions whose data-protection laws may differ from your own.
9. Cookie consent (EEA, UK & regions requiring prior consent)
Where the law requires your prior consent before non-essential (analytics) cookies are used, we ask for it and keep analytics off until you agree. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time using your browser settings, the Google Analytics opt-out, or a Global Privacy Control signal. Essential security and content-delivery functions provided by our host run on a legitimate-interests basis and are necessary for the site to work.
10. Data retention
We do not maintain our own database of visitors. Aggregate analytics are retained by Google for the period set in our Google Analytics configuration (we use a limited retention window) and by Cloudflare per its standard retention. Emails you send us are kept only as long as needed to handle your request.
11. Data security
Our site is served over encrypted HTTPS, and our host (Cloudflare) provides edge security and DDoS protection. Because we do not collect or store personal data directly, the risk of a breach originating from our site is minimal. However, no method of internet transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
12. Children's privacy
CheapTents.com is intended for adults and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA/UK). If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us at hello@cheaptents.com and we will delete it.
13. Your privacy rights
Your rights depend on where you live. To exercise any right, email hello@cheaptents.com with your request. Because we do not collect identifying information, we may need to ask for details to locate any data or to verify your request; if we cannot verify you, we may be unable to act. You may use an authorized agent where the law allows. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any right.
13a. California (CCPA / CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know, access, delete, and correct personal information we hold; to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information; and to limit the use of sensitive personal information. In the past 12 months we collected the categories of "identifiers" (e.g., IP address, online identifiers), "internet/electronic activity" (e.g., pages viewed, link clicks), and "geolocation" (approximate, country/region level), from your device automatically, for the analytics and operational purposes described above.
We do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are defined under the CPRA, and we do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16. We do not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes that would trigger the right to limit. We honor Global Privacy Control signals as opt-out requests. California's "Shine the Light" law: we do not disclose personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing.
13b. Other U.S. states
If you are a resident of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana, Florida, Delaware, Iowa, Indiana, Tennessee, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Minnesota, Maryland, Kentucky, Rhode Island, or another U.S. state with a comprehensive consumer-privacy law, you generally have the right to:
- Confirm whether we process your personal data and access it;
- Correct inaccuracies;
- Delete personal data we hold about you;
- Obtain a portable copy of data you provided; and
- Opt out of targeted advertising, the sale of personal data, and profiling with legal/significant effects.
We do not sell your personal data, do not use it for targeted advertising, and do not profile you in a way that produces legal or similarly significant effects. If we deny a request, you may appeal by replying to our decision email; if your appeal is denied, your state's attorney general may provide a complaint mechanism.
13c. EEA, UK & Switzerland (GDPR)
If you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or object to processing of your personal data; to data portability; and to withdraw consent at any time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office, ico.org.uk).
13d. Canada & other regions
If you are in Canada, Australia, Brazil, or another jurisdiction with applicable privacy law, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information, and to complain to your local regulator. Contact us and we will honor applicable rights.
14. Do Not Sell or Share / Global Privacy Control
We do not sell or share your personal information. As an additional safeguard, your browser's Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal is treated as a valid request to opt out of analytics and any sale/sharing. You may also opt out of analytics using the tools in Section 3.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review it periodically.
